It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Canon Michael McLaughlin, a much-loved priest whose gentle presence and faithful service touched countless lives. Canon Michael was a quiet and unassuming man who never sought the spotlight, yet his kindness, wisdom and compassion made him a guiding light to so many.
He had a rare gift for listening with deep empathy and understanding, never judging, always encouraging. Young and old alike found in him a trusted friend and wise counsellor. During his years as a hospital chaplain, he brought comfort and hope to the sick and suffering, while his ministry on diocesan pilgrimages to Lourdes brought strength and joy to many pilgrims.
As a parish pastor, Canon Michael was truly a man of the people. He fostered faith, community spirit and practical care for others. He played an instrumental role in many parish organisations, especially in the development of the Day Centre as a warm and welcoming meeting place for older people.
Canon Michael had many interests beyond parish life. He loved all sports, especially Gaelic football and hurling. Born close to the sea, he was a gifted swimmer and lifeguard. He cherished music of every kind, from classical and traditional Irish music to sacred music and newer styles of worship music. He also delighted in nature, flowers and gardening.
With his no-fuss, no-nonsense approach, great wisdom and steady faith, Canon Michael will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
