Good Friday

We were the helpless people
who just watched as he was dragged by.
We were the women on the roadside,
like all the people of the world who are helpless.
And he told us-
“Don’t cry for me, cry for yourselves and your children”
Someone close to us is ill and we can do little;
friends fail exams and you feel so much for them,
friends are let down and your heart bleeds.
Or someone close to you struggles with addiction,
gambling, drugs or drink,
or with unemployment, poverty,
and you’re on the sidelines,
weeping for yourself, and the friend, and the children.
Something so good is being destroyed
and we are helpless.
